How to Apply Tile Adhesive

Clean the surface

The base must be firm, level and free of dust, oil, paint and loose material. Dampen very dry, absorbent surfaces and wipe away standing water.

Measure the water

Use clean water in a clean bucket. Measure it out first; the right ratio for each grade is printed below and on the bag.

Pour the adhesive

Add the powder to the water, not the other way round, while mixing.

Wait

Let the mix stand for about 5 minutes so the additives activate.

Stir

Re-mix to a smooth, lump-free paste, ideally with a drill and paddle at low speed. Do not add more water later.

Apply

Spread with a notched trowel, comb in straight lines, place the tile and press with a slight twist. Adjust within the adjustment time and grout after 24 hours.

Working times

Open & adjustment time

Open time is how long the combed adhesive can wait before you place the tile. Adjustment time is how long you can still move the tile once placed.

Do

Good practice

Measure water every time. Use the ratio for your grade.
Spread only as much adhesive as you can tile within the open time.
Comb in straight lines so air can escape.
Back-butter large-format tiles for full coverage.
Lift a tile now and then to check the bed is fully covered.
Wait 24 hours before grouting or walking on the floor.

Don't

Common mistakes

Don't add extra water to mix that has started to stiffen.
Don't place tiles on adhesive that has skinned over.
Don't use dot-and-dab blobs. They leave hollow spots.
Don't soak tiles before fixing with adhesive.
Don't tile over dusty, oily or loose surfaces.
Don't use ST1 Silver on walls. Choose ST2 Gold or above.
